Mumbai Metro Aqua Line Expands Passenger Facilities and Mobile Connectivity Amid Mixed Commuter Reactions

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation has expanded passenger facilities and mobile connectivity on the Aqua Line, activating new lifts, escalators and station access points while extending network coverage for Airtel and Vodafone Idea users. The development has been welcomed by commuters, although concerns remain over full-line connectivity and comprehensive infrastructure rollout.

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has announced the operational launch of additional lifts and escalators at several stations on the Aqua Line, also known as Metro Line 3, from Thursday morning, marking another step in the phased enhancement of commuter facilities across the corridor.

According to the announcement, multiple station entrances and exits have now been opened for public use. At Hutatma Chowk station, Gates A1, A4, B1 and B3 are now equipped with lift access. Grant Road station has activated a lift at Gate A1, while Dharavi station has opened Gate A1 with both lift and escalator facilities. At Acharya Atre Chowk station, Gate B1 is now operational with a lift and Gate B2 with an escalator. Science Centre station has opened Gate A1, while CSMIA-T1 station has activated an escalator at Gate A. Additional access points have also been opened at Sahar Road station through Gates A4 and A5.

In a separate development, MMRC announced the expansion of mobile network connectivity on sections of the Aqua Line, addressing a long-standing concern among commuters who have struggled with the absence of mobile signal coverage throughout the underground corridor.

Airtel subscribers can now access mobile network services between Aarey JVLR and Bandra Kurla Complex, while Vodafone Idea users have connectivity from Aarey JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk.

For many passengers who have spent months encountering complete signal loss during their journeys, the latest rollout represents a significant improvement. However, questions remain over the pace and extent of connectivity expansion across the entire line.

Vodafone Idea stated that the deployment of network services across Phase 2 of the metro corridor, covering 11 stations from Science Centre Metro Station to Cuffe Parade, is currently underway. Commenting on the development, Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer of Vodafone Idea, said that reliable connectivity has become an essential component of daily commuting. He stated that the company's services are already available on Aqua Line Phase 1 and that Phase 2 will become operational soon. He added that the deployment reflects Vodafone Idea’s commitment to strengthening network availability across key customer touchpoints and delivering seamless connectivity in densely populated urban environments.

The company further informed that its mobile network services are currently operational across 16 stations stretching from Aarey JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk. These stations include SEEPZ, MIDC Andheri, Marol Naka, CSMI Airport T2, Sahar Road, CSMI Airport T1, Santacruz, Bandra Colony, Bandra Kurla Complex, Dharavi, Shitla Devi Mandir, Dadar, Siddhivinayak and Worli.Despite the progress, commuter reactions remained divided. While many passengers welcomed the expansion of network services and station facilities, others questioned why mobile connectivity remains limited to selected stretches and specific telecom operators. Several commuters sought clarity on when uninterrupted coverage would be available throughout the entire Aqua Line and across all major networks.

Social media discussions reflected a blend of appreciation, impatience and humour. One commuter humorously compared the phased rollout of metro infrastructure upgrades to a Bollywood song sequence, celebrating each improvement while questioning how long it would take for the complete vision of the project to be realised. Other users echoed similar sentiments, expressing excitement over each new enhancement while continuing to ask when full-line connectivity and comprehensive infrastructure support would finally become available.

The latest upgrades highlight MMRC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen passenger convenience and digital accessibility on the Aqua Line. While the opening of additional station facilities and the expansion of mobile connectivity mark notable progress, commuter feedback indicates that expectations remain focused on achieving seamless access and uninterrupted network coverage across the entire metro corridor.
